CNR 3900 Cu Ft NSC 40' Boxcar
CNR Number Series: 536160-537559
The Canadian National (CN) NSC 40' boxcar series 536160–537559 were all-steel freight cars constructed by National Steel Car in March and April of 1954, entering CN service shortly thereafter. These boxcars featured pressed steel sides and robust 40-foot steel construction, measuring about 40.6 feet in length. Initially equipped with roofwalks, these safety features were systematically removed between 1974 and 1978 following regulatory changes in North America. Most cars wore the standard CN “boxcar brown” paint, later displaying the famous “wet noodle” logo. These boxcars were mainstays of Canadian freight transport from the mid-1950s until their gradual retirement or rebuilding in the late 1970s through the 1980s.
