3900 Cu Ft NSC 40' Insulated Boxcar - Modernized

The NSC 40' Insulated Boxcar with 6' doors were all-steel insulated freight cars constructed by National Steel Car in 1954, entering service with the CPR shortly thereafter. They were designed specifically for grain service during the transition and twilight eras of boxcar grain transport. 

These cars had a nominal 40‑foot body length with an interior capacity of 3900 cubic feet, reflecting the maximum of the standard 40‑foot boxcars. In regular service they appeared widely in grain service through the 1960s and 1970s, with many examples still in use into the 1980s. Purpose built new rather than rebuilt, they represent the Canadian Government's request for Canadian Railroads to provide dedicated grain cars. Initially equipped with roofwalks, these safety features were systematically removed between 1974 and 1978 following regulatory changes in North America.
