Number series (5511-5517)

The SD45-2B is a cabless, or "B-unit," version of the standard SD45-2 locomotive. Unlike conventional locomotives, B-units lack a cab and are controlled remotely from other locomotives in the consist. Santa Fe created these SD45-2B units by converting standard SD45-2s during remanufacturing starting in 1987 at the San Bernadino shops in California. The conversions involved removing the cab and relocating the dynamic brakes to the opposite end of the hood from the radiators (with the exception of unit 5510, which retained the original configuration)

The SD45-2B units were used in heavy freight service, often paired with standard SD45-2s and other high-horsepower locomotives. Their cabless design made them less flexible for solo operation but ideal for boosting power in multiple-unit consists.

These units served well into the BNSF era, a testament to their robust design and the railroad’s commitment to efficient operations.
